                                                              Secretary to the Planning Board                                                     

Secretarial duties to the Planning Board (Board) and a contact person for the public and other Village/Town Boards and Officials.

Hours: Monday – Friday, 8am – 4pm.  Attendance at one (1) evening meeting per month is required.  Meeting:  Planning Board.

Department: Building Department             Supervision: Instruction from the Board, Mayor or Clerk/Treasurer as to their needs and those things under their jurisdiction.  Day to day supervision by the Building Inspector.

Minimum qualifications: High school diploma or high school equivalency diploma.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Schedule meetings/hearings, set up and prepare agenda for Board meetings;
  • Process mail for Board’s review;
  • Post to Village website all meetings and changes in meeting schedule in accordance with The Open Meeting Law;
  • Attend, record and transcribe minutes at all Board meetings;
  • Maintain record of all approved meeting minutes;
  • Prepare bills payable;
  • Type forms, reports and letters for the Board;
  • Place legal advertisements/public hearing notices;
  • Fulfill all information requests;
  • Update and maintain files;
  • Answer phone calls, take messages;
  • Process all petition filings and applications; assist applicants with procedural requirements; check for completeness;
  • Operates a variety of simple office equipment, including computers with word processing and other applications;
  • Posts simple data to various office records, prepares, and types reports based on tabulations of posted data and simple arithmetical computations;
  • Provide the General Public with an office for questions related to the Board, and a place to examine a copy of the Board By-Laws, meeting minutes etc.; and
  • Other miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Requirements: Proficient in Microsoft Office; Strong computer skills

Salary: Commensurate with experience   Desired qualifications:  Office experience, construction knowledge and Spanish speaking are a plus.

                                                      PART-TIME QUALITY OF LIFE OFFICER

  • Patrols areas where meters are located to prevent and detect violations of local ordinances governing parking and deposit of fees;
  • Writes and distributes summonses for overtime violation at parking meters;
  • Writes summonses for violations of ordinances governing use of handicapped parking spaces and no-parking zones;
  • Receives and investigates complaints about violations of local ordinances;
  • Issues and serves summonses if violations are not corrected;
  • Prepares reports on inspections conducted and recommends actions to correct violations;
  • Reviews records to establish ownership of property and to determine if permits and licenses required by local ordinances have been obtained;
  • Maintains records of code violations and corrective action taken;
  • Answers inquiries from the public concerning local ordinances;
  • Prepares written reports and recommendations concerning local ordinances;
  • May prepare information for the courts regarding violations;
  • May appear as a witness in District court and/or other courts.

Qualified candidates must have:

  • Good knowledge of local ordinances governing parking and parking meters;
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions;
  • Ability to deal with the general public in a courteous and tactful manner;
  • Thorough knowledge of the local procedures for the enforcement of local ordinances;
  • Thorough knowledge of federal, state and local laws, ordinances and regulations concerning public order and safety;
  • Good knowledge of effective investigatory techniques;
  • Ability to keep records and to prepare written reports;
  • Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; and
  • Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

A valid, clean driver’s license is required.

Hours: 20 hours per week with flexibility to work some evening hours.   Starting salary: $18.50 per hour

Certification needed: Applicant must be able to obtain certification as a Building Safety Inspector within 18 months of appointment date to the position.

FEMALE DETENTION ATTENDANTS

The Amityville Police Department is looking for female Detention Attendants who work on a call-in as needed basis, days, nights and weekends, to guard females detained at the Amityville police station.

Detention Attendants will:

• Search female prisoners;
• Observe inmates in cells to assure their well-being and adherence to regulations and rules;
• Make required inspections of prisoners;
• Maintain detention log with periodic entries

All uniforms and equipment are provided by the Police Department. We offer a minimum 4-hour tour when you are called in. The rate of pay is $15.30 per hour, with a weekend and night differential pay of $20.40 per hour and a bonus based on call-in response.

Applicants must successfully pass a background investigation, as well as medical and psychological testing prior to employment. Detention Attendants must be 18 years of age or older AND have graduated from a standard senior high school OR possess a high school equivalency diploma.  No experience is necessary and all training is provided. A valid New York State driver’s license is required.

Crossing Guard 

The Village of Amityville is seeking interested candidates for  crossing guard positions.  We are looking for reliable, trustworthy individuals who enjoy the outdoors and interaction with the public.  Interested candidates must pass a thorough background check and enjoy providing a safe environment for our children when crossing some of our major intersections and roadways.  Qualified candidates who are hired receive $13.26 per hour, uniforms, and uniform maintenance.  Medical coverage is not included.
