The Suffolk County Department of Health performs testing regularly of beach water throughout the region for the safety of our residents. If excessive levels of bacteria are found at the Amityville Beach, swimming will be prohibited until the water returns to satisfactory levels. According to Suffolk County Commissioner of Health Dr. James Tomarken, bathing in bacteria-contaminated water can result in gastrointestinal illness, as well as infections of the eyes, ears, nose, and throat. To find out if the water is open for swimming, call the Bathing Beach HOTLINE at 852-5822 or contact the Department’s Office of Ecology at 631-852-5760 during normal business hours.
